Abstract

[Also in Division C3] Useful as sludge-dispersing additives in lubricants and fuels is the product obtained by contacting (A) at least one oil-soluble ester prepared by reaction of a mono- or polycarboxylic acid and an aliphatic polyhydric alcohol wherein the carboxylic acid moiety of the ester contains at least fifty aliphatic carbon atoms exclusive of the carboxyl carbon atoms and the alcohol moiety contains up to forty aliphatic carbon atoms, with (B) at least one organic epoxide, the amount of (A) and (B) in the reaction mixture being such that the ratio of equivalents of alcohol present in the ester to equivalents of epoxide is 1 : 0À05 to 1:5. Examples disclose mineral and diester lubricating oil, kerosene, gasoline and diesel fuel containing one of the following products: an ester prepared by reacting polyisobutenylsubstituted succinic anhydride with polypropylene glycol or pentaerythritol, that has been contacted with propylene oxide; and an ester prepared by reacting chlorinated polyisobutylene/acrylic acid with sorbitol or pentaerythritol, that has been contacted with propylene oxide or ethylene oxide. Conventional optional additives (specified) may also be present.
