1,210,773. Basic barium salts of α-alkylalkane monocarboxylic acids. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 25 June, 1969, No. 32079/69. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C5] Basic barium salts of α-alkylalkanemonocarboxylic acids are prepared by reacting at elevated temperature a mixture of one or more acids, a hydrocarbon oil, barium oxide and at least 50% by weight of methanol containing less than 1% by weight of water; introducing carbon dioxide to the mixture at elevated temperature and finally removing solid particles and methanol from the solution. Acids containing more than 10 C atoms are preferred, in particular those obtained by reacting olefines with carbon monoxide and water. The hydrocarbon oils may be xylene, or fuels and lube oils derived from mineral oils and oils such as diesel fuels e.g. kerosine and gas oils. The salts in diesel fuels are anti-smoke additives.
