Fuels comprise a hydrocarbon fuel, a minor amount of an organo-metallic anti-knock agent (e.g. tetra-ethyl lead) and a minor amount of a full ester of a polycarboxylic acid in which two of the carboxyl groups are esterified with a benzyl or alkyl-benzyl group are separated by up to 2 carbon atoms and are in a cis relationship when separated by 2 carbon atoms (e.g. dibenzyl oxalate, malonate, maleate, and citraconate).
