Abstract

Diesel engine fuels comprise a major proportion of a distilled mixture of hydrocarbons of b.p. at least 140 DEG C., and a minor proportion of an oil-soluble Group IIa (Mendeleef Periodic Table) metal salt of a dialkyl ester of a sulphodicarboxylic acid, the esterifying alkyl groups having at least 4 carbon atoms, and said minor proportion being such as to provide a fuel metal content of 0.02-2.0 wt. per cent. A typical additive is calcium di-decyl a -sulphosuccinate, and the additives may be added to the fuel as a solution or dispersion in a carrier liquid, e.g. toluene, xylene or kerosine. Optional additives mentioned include a chlorinated wax/phenol/phthalyl chloride condensation product, 2,6-ditertbutyl-4-methyl phenol, olefine/maleic anhydride condensation products, disalicylal-ethylene di-imine, cyclohexyl nitrate, and lubricating oils.
