Abstract
1,250,747. Abrading. CARBORUNDUM CO. 25 March, 1970 [11 April, 1969], No. 14510/70. Heading B3D. [Also in Division B8] A continuous treating apparatus comprises a treating means 16 disposed adjacent a treating chamber 14, an infeed chamber 12 and an exit chamber 22 at least one of which is tubular and has a spiral article conveyer 24, 26 mounted therein, means for rotating the tubular chamber and its conveyer, at least the first flight 32 of the conveyer having an axial opening, and a bridging element 28 disposed at the entrance of the chamber and extending to the axial opening of the first flight and connected thereto to prevent the leading edge of the flight from cutting through articles being inserted into the chamber. The treating chamber consists of a flexible trough-like conveyer formed of slats and articles in the chamber are treated by blasting wheels 16 as they are tumbled by the conveyer. Used abrasive passes through the slats and is reclaimed by a screw conveyer 18. The infeed chamber 12 is tubular and contains a spiral conveyer 24 for the articles to be treated, the entrance of the chamber containing the bridging element 28 which is in the form of a tube extending through the axial opening in the first flight of the conveyer so that the articles drop between the flights and are not engaged by the leading edge of the conveyer. The exit chamber 22 also includes a spiral conveyer 26 and a bridging element 30 which likewise extends through an axial opening in the first flight of its spiral conveyer. The bridging elements may be convergent or divergent to control the rate of progress of the articles. The tubular chamber 12 and the bridging element 30 act to guide the slatted conveyer 14 to form the trough-like shape. All three chambers may be driven by the same or separate drives and the exit chamber may be driven faster than the others to ensure discharge of the articles faster than they are fed into the treating chamber.
