Abstract

[Also in Divisions C3 and C6] In the manufacture of permanent press articles, e.g. garments, from a fabric comprising for example protein fibres e.g. wool, mohair, silk or regenerated protein fibres, the fabric is impregnated with a formulation comprising an aziridine derivative having the formula: in which A is the residue of a polyether polyol or polyester polyol having a valence of n, R is a radical containing at least two carbon atoms, R<SP>1</SP> is amino, halogen, an alkoxy radical containing 1-6 carbon atoms or a radical of the structure: in which R<SP>11</SP> is hydrogen or an alkyl radical containing 1-6 carbon atoms, n is an integer of 2-10 and x is 0, 1 or 2, the article is formed from the fabric, at least are crease imparted in the article and curing is effected. The aziridine-compound may be applied to the fabric as a solution in benzene, toluene, xylene, dioxane, diisopropyl ether, dibutyl ether, butyl acetate, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, ethylene dichloride, trichloroethylene, 1, 3-dichlorobenzene, benzotrifluoride, 1, 3-bis (trifluoromethyl) benzene or petroleum distillates or as an aqueous emulsion containing an alkylphenoxypoly-(ethyleneoxy) ethanol, polyoxyethylene sorbitan monopalmitate, polyoxyethylene lauryl ether, polyoxyethylenepolyoxypropylene stearate, sorbitan monopalmitate or -laurate, and there may also be applied to the fabric prior to curing a sulphur-containing reducing agent, e.g. alkali metal, alkaline earth metal and ammonium sulphides and hydrosulphides, thioglycollic acid and its alkali metal and ammonium salts, beta-mercapto ethanol, mono- or di-thioglycerol, thiomalic or thiolactic acid and salts thereof, butyl mercaptan, thiophenol, thiocresol, formamidine sulphinic acid, formaldehyde sulphoxylates, alkali metal or ammonium sulphites, bisulphites and hydrosulphites, sodium formaldehyde bisulphite or sodium acetone bisulphite. If the fabric contains protein fibres and cellulosic fibres, e.g. viscose rayon, cuprammonium rayon and/or cotton, the treating formulation may also contain a thermosetting reactant for cellulose, e.g. dimethylol dihydroxy ethylene urea, formaldehyde or urea, uron, carbonate or propylene urea compounds, and a catalyst, e.g. zinc nitrate, perchlorate or fluoborate, magnesium chloride or perchlorate, phosphoric, citric, acetic or tartaric acid, acid phosphates, ammonium chloride or an amine hydrochloride. The fabric may also contain nylon, polyethylene terephthalate or polyacrylonitrile fibres.
