Abstract

1357120 Fire-proofing substrates based on polysaccharides ISRAEL MINISTRY OF COMMERCE & INDUSTRY 20 May 1971 [5 June 1970] 16045/71 Heading C3U [Also in Divisions D1-D2] Substrates comprising a hydroxylated polymer are rendered flame-retardant and/or have their wettability, water absorption capacity and stain release properties improved by treatment with an aqueous solution containing a sulphamate selected from ammonium sulphamate and (N-substituted ammonium) sulphamates, and at least one cross-linking agent which is not polymerizable except by cross-linking with the substrate, and curing. The N-substituted sulphamates may be methylammonium, triethylammonium, ethanolammonium, morpholinium or piperidinium sulphamates. The cross-linking agents include carbamates, chloroalcohols, methoxymethylated dialdehydes, urons, such as dimethoxymethyluron, dihydroxy-dimethylol ethylene urea, isocyanates and phosphorus compounds containing groups capable of reacting with hydroxyls. Other ingredients include ammonium phosphate, phosphoramide, tri-(N-methyl) phosphoramide or tri-(N-methy- lol)phosphoramide to reduce afterglow. The treatment solution is applied by padding, dried at 100-130‹ C. and cured at 120-220‹ C. in a forced-draught oven. The weight ratio of sulphamate to cross-linking agent may be between 5 : 1 and 1 : 2. The treatment is stated to improve antistatic properties. Hydroxylated substrates specified include starches, amyloses, dextrins, carragaenins, gums, sugars, and cellulose acetate and may be in the form of fibres, yarns, fabrics, garments, powder, pulp, sheets, blocks or rods. The treated material may be bleached with sodium chlorite solution.
