Abstract

A composition suitable for warp sizing textile materials comprises an aqueous solution containing poly (ethylene oxide) having a reduced viscosity in acetonitrile of at least one at 30 DEG C. The reduced viscosity is obtained by dividing the specific viscosity by the concentration of the polymer in the solution and is measured at a concentration of 0,2 grams of polymer in 100 ml of acetonitrile at 30 DEG C. The poly (ethylene oxide) may have a molecular weight from at least 20,000 to several hundred thousand and higher. The solution may also contain up to 60% by weight of the poly (ethylene oxide) of a polyalkylene glycol, e.g. polyethylene glycol having a molecular weight of 400-15,000, or up to 90% by weight of the poly (ethylene oxide) of starch, e.g. corn starch, or a hydroxyalkylated starch. The poly (ethylene oxide) may be prepared by polymerizing ethylene oxide in the presence of 0,3%-3% calcium, strontium, barium or manganese carbonate at 90 DEG -150 DEG C. of 0,1%-2% of strontium methylate, calcium glycoxide, barium phenolate or the calcium derivatives of methoxy methanol or diethylene glycol at 90 DEG -150 DEG C. or of 0,02%-10% of the hexammoniates or amides of the alkaline earth metals or the decomposition products of the hexammoniates which contain the alkaline earth metal, nitrogen and hydrogen at 0 DEG -60 DEG C. Specification 568,150 is referred to.ALSO:Strontium methylate is prepared by reacting strontium with methanol. Specification 568,150 is referred to.ALSO:Synthetic or natural textile material, e.g. yarn, fibre or thread, is warp sized with an aqueous solution containing poly(ethylene oxide) having a reduced viscosity in acetonitrile of at least one at 30 DEG C. The reduced viscosity is obtained by dividing the specific viscosity by the concentration of the polymer in the solution measured in grams of polymer per 100 ml of solvent and is measured at a concentration of 0,2 grams of polymer in 100 ml of acetonitrile at 30 DEG C. The poly(ethylene oxide) may have a molecular weight from at least 20,000 to several hundred thousand and higher. The size solution preferably has a viscosity of 100-15,000 centipoises and may be applied to the material at room temperature or at temperatures up to 190 DEG F. The solution may also contain up to 60% by weight of the poly(ethylene oxide) of a polyalkylene glycol, e.g. polyethylene glycol having a molecular weight of 400-15,000, or up to 90% by weight of the poly(ethylene oxide) of starch, e.g. corn starch, or a hydroxyalkylated starch. Specified fibres are cotton, wool, viscose rayon, nylon, "Orlon" (Registered Trade Mark), "Dacron" (Registered Trade Mark) and "Dynel" (Registered Trade Mark). Specification 568,150 is referred to.
