Abstract

1486816 Fire-retardant fabric-treating compositions TEIJIN Ltd 12 Dec 1974 [12 Dec 1973] 53870/74 Heading C3R [Also in Divisions D1-D2] A fabric comprising polyester and cellulosic fibres or filaments is fire-proofed by impregnation with (a) a tetrakis-hydroxymethyl phosphonium compound, (b) mono-to hexa-methylolmelamine, optionally partially etherified with propanol or butanol, or pre-condensates thereof, (c) a thiocarbamic acid derivative R 1 R 2 NCSX where X is selected from -NH 2 , -NR 3 R 4 , -OR 5 , -NHCONH 2 , -NHCSNH 2 and guanidino and R 1 to R 5 are independently hydrogen or a hydrocarbon group containing 1 to 12 carbon atoms or R 1 or R 2 , together with X form a cyclic structure with the nitrogen and carbon atoms to which they are attached (d) a halogenated phosphorous compound selected from where R 6 to R 11 are independently a monovalent hydrocarbon group containing 1 to 12 carbon atoms at least one of R 6 to R 8 and at least one of R 9 to R 11 containing at least one bromine and/or chlorine atom, and (e) an alkylethylene urea wherein the alkyl group is saturated and contains 8 to 22 carbon atoms, the amounts in the fabric, based on the total uptake being a 40 to 80% b 10 to 50% c 5 to 25% d 3 to 10% e 1 to 5% and satisfying the equation and heat setting the impregnated fabric. Compound (a) is the tetrakis-hydroxymethyl phosphonium chloride or hydroxide. Compound (c) is thiourea, ethylene thiourea, diphenyl thiourea, thiobiuret, propylene thiourea, ethyl thiocarbamate or cyclohexyl thiocarbamate. The treating agents are applied in an aqueous dispersion or organic solution or compound (d) is applied in a solution of an organic solvent then the remaining agents are applied in aqueous solution.
