Abstract

Textile materials other than those made wholly of polyethylene terephthalate fibres are rendered antistatic and may be lubricated by applying thereto 0.01-0.5% by weight of a mixture of (a) a nonionic surface active agent which is a condensate of an alkylene oxide, e.g. ethylene or propylene oxide, with a fatty acid, a compound containing alcoholic hydroxyl groups but free from ester groups, an amide or a mercaptan and (b) a non- polymeric cationic surface-active agent in which the atom carrying the positive charge is nitrogen or sulphur and in which all the covalencies of the atom are satisfied by organic radicals, the cationic agent (b) comprising 1-50% by weight of the mixture and the mixture being applied to the textile material in the absence of an anionic surface active agent or other agent incompatible with the mixture, lanolin or a substance obtained by condensing a saturated acid, acid ester or acid halide with an aliphatic polyamine, reacting the condensate with a carbamyl compound and converting the compound obtained to its corresponding acid salt or alkylated product. The non-ionic surface active agent is preferably one obtained by condensing 2-60 mols of the alkylene oxide with 1 mol of the other component of the condensate, specified compounds being those produced by the reaction of stearic acid with 9 mols of ethylene oxide or cetyl alcohol with 2.5 of 16 mols of ethylene oxide. The anion of the cationic surface active agent may be chloride, bromide, methosulphate or nitrite, specified compounds being cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide or nitrite, lauryl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride, dimethyl phenyl benzyl ammonium chloride, cetyl pyridinium bromide or tetradecyl pyridinium chloride. The nonionic and cationic agents may be applied to the textile material as a solution or dispersion in an aqueous medium in a single step or consecutively by dipping or spraying or by means of a brush or furnishing roller at ordinary or raised temperatures and the textile material then squeezed or hydro-extracted. The treating liquor may also contain a lubricating agent, e.g. polyethylene, paraffin wax or stearamide. Staple fibre, filaments, rovings, yarns, non-woven webs or woven or knitted fabrics made from polynosic cellulosic rayon, nylon, polyacrylonitrile or polypropylene may be treated.
