1,249,888. Metal racket frame. T. P. GALICH. 5 Nov., 1968 [6 Nov., 1967; 7 Oct., 1968], No. 52308/68. Heading A6D. A racket for tennis or similar games comprises a one-piece frame 12 formed of a lightweight non-ferrous metal, preferably a magnesium alloy, the frame consisting of an oval head 18 having an annular groove 26 extending around its outer wall 28 at the mid-line thereof and a plurality of coplanar radial openings passing from its inner wall through to the groove 26, through which openings the strings 14 are passed; a shaft 20 extending from the head 18 at the ends of the groove 26; and a handle 36 at the end of the shaft 20, which handle has substantially the cross-section required in the finished racket. The shaft 20 is preferably bifurcated and the handle 36 is hollow, its axial hollow core 38 being closed at the outer end by a cap 40 and at the shaft end by a plug 42, and the handle being covered by, e.g. a leather wrapping 16. Openings may be formed in the head 18 adjacent the shaft 20 to reduce weight, and ribs are preferably provided between the arms 34a, 34b of the bifurcated shaft 20, disposed transversely thereto and formed integrally with the frame 12, to strengthen the racket. The preferred magnesium alloy contains 8.7 wt. % aluminium and 0.7 wt. % zinc.
