Abstract

1,249,359. Trimming tabs and rudders. HESSELMAN BIL-AERO A.B. 23 Dec., 1968 [29 Dec., 1967], No. 61114/68. Headings B7M and B7V. In a vessel having a control member such as a trim or rudder flap for providing a steering force, e.g. to influence the attitude or course of the vessel, the angle of said member is adjustable by a variable volume pressure space in communication with an opening in a surface in contact with the passing water so that the space is subjected to the pressure of said water. Several applications of the invention to a trim flap are shown and described, e.g. in Fig. 4 a trim flap 5 pivotally connected to a hull 1 by a flexible strap 3 has its angle adjusted by a wedge-shaped actuator bag 7, the interior of which communicates via a line 9 and opening 11 in a plate 13 on the stern. The geometry of the plate 13, and hence the force of the passing water at the opening 11, is varied by a regulator flap 15 being swung down by an actuator bag 17 supplied with pressure medium from an operating unit in the vessel. The regulator flap 15 may be hinged on the flap 5. In Fig. 6 the line 9 is connected to an opening 39 in a cylindrical body 33 mounted in a holder 35 to be rotated about its vertical axis so that the opening 39 can be made to face any direction to obtain the desired pressure of passing water. In Fig. 8 (not shown) the opening at the end of the line 9 is arranged to be responsive to the attitude of the hull. Fig. 9 shows flaps 82, 84 supported on either side of a rudder 80 by bags 86, 88 in communication via openings 91, 93 with water passing through tubes 90, 92, the flow of water through the tubes being governed by valve flaps 94, 96 actuated by operating means 98, 100. The flaps 82, 84 may extend along the entire rear edge of the rudder, in which case the rudder is held fixed and steering is by action of the flaps. If the flaps extend only partially along the rear edge the rudder is left free and steering is achieved by the servoaction of the flaps.
