Abstract

1,248,903. Washing machines. THOMAS BROADBENT & SONS Ltd. 19 Sept., 1968 [13 Oct., 1967], No. 46699/67. Heading D1A. [Also in Division F2] The horizontal rotary basket of a washing and spin-drying machine has, at least at one end, a hollow neck of less diameter than the basket, surrounding a charging opening, and supported in a water bearing which supports the load applied thereto by the charged basket predominantly by hydrostatic pressure during washing and hydrodynamic pressure during spin-drying. As shown, a hollow shaft 16 is secured to a ring 32 welded into an opening in the basket wall 14. A bearing ring 35 is secured in a ring 34 welded into the opening 18 of casing wall 17. Ring 35 has circumferential lands 22, 23 connected at intervals by axial lands 37 to form cavities 9 and water retaining rings 41, 42. A ring 45 is secured to shaft 16. Water from the annular manifold channel 46 is fed through passages 50 and orifice restrictors 48 in passages 49 to cavities 9. The water escapes through the space between lands 22, 23 and shaft 16 to grooves 28 in ring 35 connected by axially extending holes 54 to radial holes 55 connected to'a discharge manifold. Both ends of the basket may be supported on such a bearing or the other end may carry a solid shaft mounted in a ball bearing.
