Abstract
1,248,372. Electroluminescence. NATIONAL CASH REGISTER CO. 5 May, 1970 [9 May, 1969], No. 21529/70. Heading C4S. [Also in Division H1] An electroluminescent display device includes first and second transparent substrates 12, 14 (e.g. of glass), each having a plurality of parallel transparent or opaque conductors 16, 20 on one surface and aligned grooves 26, 28 in the inner surfaces, the substrates, which may be curved or planar, being in cross-array so that cells form at the cross-over points, and electroluminescent material, which may be gaseous or otherwise, being in the grooves. The conductors need not be perpendicular. Edges may be sealed by fused glass layer 36 and in fabrication, the grooves are evacuated by conduit 38 prior to insertion of a Ne, He and N mix at one-sixth to five-sixths atmospheres, for example. In fabrication, opaque conductors 16 may be deposited by photoresist and deposition techniques, these serving as a mask for subsequent exposure of a photo-resist layer (46) (Fig. 3b, not shown), unexposed areas being removed and the substrate etched to produce grooves. Alternatively, Cr may be vacuum deposited over a transparent SnO 2 layer, etched (Fig. 6, not shown), and grooves then formed as previously, the Cr then being removed.
