Abstract

1,248,220. Magnetic structures. TELEFUNKEN PATENTVERWERTUNGS G.m.b.H. 29 Nov., 1968 [1 Dec., 1967], No. 56837/68. Heading H1H. [Also in Division C7] In a process of electrolessly depositing Ni-Fe alloys on a non-conducting substrate such as glass or a plastics material, the substrate is first chemically treated, sensitized in a tin chloride solution containing e.g. sodium lauryl sulphate, then baked e.g. at 80‹ C., activated in a nobile metal salt solution such as PdCl 2 and finally coated in a bath containing Ni and Fe. In the case of a plastics substrate the chemical pretreatment is effected with chromosulphuric acid or in the case of glass with an acid polish containing alkali salts of HF, H 2 SO 4 and buffers. The coating bath contains 2À5-4 g/l. of Ni ions, 0À8-2 g/l of Fe ions, 2-8 g/l. sodium hypophosphite, 40-80 ml/l. of hydrazine and 22 g/l. potassium sodium tartrate. The pH is maintained at 10.5 by the addition of concentrated ammonia. Deposition may be carried out in the presence of a magnetic field and the coating preferably consists of 81% Ni and 19% Fe.
