Abstract

1,248,082. Laying railway track. F. PLASSER. 19 Dec., 1968 [29 Dec., 1967], No. 60338/68. Heading E1G. - A continuously-advancing track-laying train comprising equipment 12 for welding together and then laying new rail lengths 10 on to sleepers 15 includes one or more stages of heating or cooling means 17, 17' for bringing the rails to a temperature approximating to the mean of the expected extreme weather temperatures. The apparatus shown comprises a front train 2 ..5 running on the old track and carrying the new rails 10 and old sleepers, a rear train 6 .. 9 running on the new track and carrying the oil rails 11, the apparatus operating as in Specification 1,237,437. The rear train is followed by a ballast receptacle 19 and compactor 18. Where there is no old track. Fig. 5 (not shown), the front train comprises crawler vehicles (21) running on the ballast; this particular train incorporates four heating or cooling stages (17) and also includes a device (22) running on the new track for blowing hot or cold air on a new rail 10 immediately before it is laid and fastened. Means may be provided for continuing the heating for a short time after the rails have been laid and for cooling or heating the rail lengths before the welding equipment 12. The means 17 may comprise heating or cooling coils for gas, liquid or electricity. In modifications the rails are directly heated by burners or by gas or liquid jets, Fig. 8 (not shown), or resistance-heated by sliding electric contacts, Figs. 3, 9 (not shown). Cooling may be effected by air and carbon dioxide snow.
