Abstract
1,247,891. Evaluating dryer performance. INDUSTRIAL NUCLEONICS CORP. 23 Sept., 1968 [5 Oct., 1967], No. 45186/68. Heading F4G. [Also in Division G1] The moisture contents of a moving paper sheet 12 at points A and B before and after the dryer 10 are compared with target values to give first and second difference signals of appropriate sense, and the series of the difference signals are compared to give an indication of dryer performance (so that the heat supply to the dryer 10 may be adjusted). Dryer performance is acceptable if the pre-dryer moisture content is greater than its target value and the post-dryer content less than its target value; unacceptable if the pre-dryer content is less than its target value and the post-dryer content is greater than its target value; and indeterminate for other moisture contents. Pre-dryer (S A ) and post-dryer (S B ) moisture content signals are derived by a computer 16 from direct moisture measurement (M B ) at 22 (e.g. by a capacitance or neutron reflection gauge) and from weight measurements (W A and W B ) at 18 and 20 (e.g. by radiation gauges) of the sheet. In Fig. 1, target values fed in at 26 and 28 from a manually set potentiometer (not shown) are subtracted in a processor 24 from the moisture signals S A and S B , and the relative sense of the difference signals is measured by a phase sensitive circuit and indicated at 30a, e.g. by a lamp display or typewritten record. The gauges 18, 20, 22 are traversed across the zones 1-8 of the sheet (or a number of gauges is provided) and the signal from gauge 18 is delayed so that the computer 16 receives signals from the same area of the sheet. In Fig. 4, average target values (continuously determined by devices 52 and 54) are subtracted in units 56 and 58 from the moisture signals S A and S B to give signals W and D which are fed to the processor 24. The processor 24 comprises diodes 63-66 feeding multipliers 60 and 62 connected to a summing amplifier 68 coupled to a qualitative indicator 72 and a quantitative indicator 73 for each zone. In other embodiments, the signals W and D are coupled by diodes to AND gates connected to red and green lamps and to a NOR gate connected to a yellow (indeterminate) lamp, for each zone; a chart recorder using coloured inks, or rotation through a small angle, is used in place of the lamps.
