Abstract
1,115,904. X-ray testing of cellulosic sheets. REED PAPER GROUP Ltd. Sept. 8, 1965 [June 11, 1964], No.24313/64. Heading G1A. The concentration of a component in cellulosic sheet material e.g. paper is measured by directing a beam of soft X-rays through the sheet and calculating the concentration from the intensity of transmitted X-rays. If the concentration of only one component varies and the mass per unit area remains constant, a single measurement of X-ray absorption suffices. If the concentration of more than one component may vary, measurements are taken at two wavelengths, close to and on either side of an absorption edge of the element to be determined. The radiation is detected by a proportional or scintillation counter and the output therefrom is fed to a pulse height analyzer. By adjusting the pulse height analyzer, the system may be made effectively sensitive to any desired wavelength whilst using a source of broad wavelength range. The measurement may be compensated for variations in mass per unit area by measuring the latter with a #-ray absorption gauge. The invention may be applied to measuring the moisture content of paper produced by a Foudrinier machine.
