Abstract

1,247,057. Plastics bags. R. F. NESTLER. 10 Oct., 1968, No. 47995/68. Heading B5D. [Also in Divisions A4 and B8] A device for positioning at a grocery checkout counter to permit efficient manual packaging of groceries comprises a plurality of nested flexible plastics bags 5 held open on a tubular frame 6 of a stand 9 by having their open ends collectively folded outwardly and backwardly over the upper edge of the frame to form nested turned-back cuffs which so permit ready removal of successive bags. The nested bags are made, Figs. 2-8 (not shown), by winding a single web of plastics film 12a about a rotatable mandrel 10 to overlie one end portion of the tubular frame which itself overlies an end portion of the mandrel, heatsealing the end of the wound film to the light of the film and cutting the film to form a longitudinally seamed tube heat-sealing a circular plastics film piece 21 around its periphery to one end of the tube, repeating the procedure to build-up a plurality of bags one upon the other on the mandrel, removing the mandrel and moving a plunger 25 against the closed ends of the nested bags axially inwardly of the tubular frame 6 thereby providing the nested bags having turned-backed cuffs. The mandrel plus the completed bags are rotated through a slight angle after each bag is successively formed to avoid alignment of the longitudinal seams of plastics bags.
