Abstract

1366881 Wrapping machines POSSIS CORP 24 Aug 1971 [24 Aug 1970] 40587/70 Heading B8C In a wrapping machine, a collapsed gusseted tubular foil of heat shrinkable plastic is pulled from a roll R<SP>1</SP> by nip rollers 14 and is opened up and pulled down over a palletized load, supported on a conveyer 11, by suction cups 20 and claws 27. The wrapped load is then carried to a heat shrinking tunnel. The machine includes a transverse heat-sealing device 17 and a cutting device 18 which partially severs the tube, complete severing being effected by the pull exerted by the cups 20 and the claws 27. Alternatively, (Figs. 14-16), the tube is in the form of a series of bags separated by perforations, the bags being torn off from the tube by rollers (101) acting in conjunction with the nip rollers 14. The suction cups 20 are secured, via collapsible bellows 26, to a respective arm 25 gripped between a cross head 57 slidably mounted on a rod 30 and a saddle 50 which engages a second rod 31. The rods 30, 31 are secured to a carriage 32 reciprocated by a chain 39 along a tack 38 secured to a standard 22 of a pair of pivotally mounted carrier frames 21. The claws 27 are pivotally supported on the arms 25 and are pivoted by air cylinders 84 to engage the side panels SP of the gusseted tube and hold the same against resilient anvils 86. When the suction cups 20 initially engage the side panels SP of the tube, the bellows 26 are evacuated via vacuumlines 75 to retract the cups 20 against the action of springs (76, Fig. 10) housed within tubes 73 connected between the belows and the arms 25 and biasing rods 72 connected to the bellows and the cups 20 to the cup-extended position. To adjust the apparatus for various sized tubular foils and loads, the arms 25 are slidable relative to the crossheads 57 and the saddles 58, which latter are adjustable longitudinally of the rods 30, 31, and the saddles 58 are slidable with respect to the crossheads 57 so as to alter the angular disposition of the arms 25.
