Abstract

1,246,045. Preparing microscope specimens. PERKIN-ELMER CORP. March 18, 1969 [March 19, 1968], No. 14203/69. Heading G2J. A method and apparatus is described for producing a thin layer of blood for analysis. A motor 1 has a hollow output shaft 3 which drives a flywheel 4 and is coupled through a clutch 5 to a shaft 6 which drives a platform 7. One end of shaft 6 is hollow and communicates with a cavity in the surface of the platform. The cavity may be evacuated through line 8, bushing 9 and port 10, and a blood reception plate 11, e.g. a glass cover slip or a transparentplastics slip, may then be secured on the platform by suction. Some blood 12 is then deposited and the motor started, and when flywheel 4 has reached the required speed clutch lever 14 is depressed. Plate 11 is then quickly accelerated to the speed of the motor and the spinning motion causes the majority of the blood to leave the plate and strike shield 13, but there is left on the plate a thin layer which is completely monocellular and also substantially uniform in cell distribution. The plate is finally removed, inverted and attached to a microscope slide.
