Abstract
1,245,321. Polymerizing vinyl chloride. CHEMISCHE WERKE HULS A.G. 17 Jan., 1969 [20 Jan., 1968; 17 April, 1968; 18 April. 1968], No. 2820/69. Heading C3P. Vinyl chloride is polymerized or copolymerized in aqueous emulsion at a pH of 6-11 using as emulsifier 0À6-4% (based on monomers) by weight of an alkali metal salt of an alpha-sulpho fatty acid of 12-24 carbons, and in the case of copolymers 0À02-2% (based on solid content of the resulting dispersion) by weight of an alkaline agent is added after polymerization but before processing; this addition is optional for homopolymers. Lithium carbonate is a preferred alkali. In examples homopolymers and copolymers with vinyl acetate, vinyl isobutyl ether, propylene, ethylene or vinylidene chloride are prepared and the heat stability of the products with various stabilizers tested. In some examples a seeding polymer is first formed.
