Abstract

1,245,199. Knitting. NORTH AMERICAN ROCKWELL CORP. 19 May, 1970 [25 Aug., 1969], No. 24239/70. Heading D1K. In knitting a twisted two-ply closed stocking toe having a single ply portion 20 at the top of the toe, and in which the inner ply 25 and first portion of the outer ply 27 are knit on alternate needles, the succeeding portion 32 of the outer ply is knit on all needles. When the toe is commenced alternate needles in a predetermined arc are inactivated, holding their loops. Knitting on the active needles produces a loop of fabric around the arc and the single ply portion 20 on the remaining needles. When sufficient single ply fabric has been knit alternate needles throughout the circle are inactivated to knit a ring of multiply fabric. Following the knitting of an inner tab 62, by co-operation of transfer bits and alternate needles, the portion 32 is knit by all needles. The inner and outer plies are joined by transferring the held loops to the needles, and knitting an outer tab 70 on all needles.
