Abstract

1,245,003. Electro-depositing bright cyanide copper. KEWANEE OIL CO. Sept.30, 1968 [Oct. 27, 1967], No. 46380/68. Heading C7B. Bright copper is electro-deposited from an aqueous alkaline copper cyanide bath containing as brightener a compound of the formula where R in conjunction withs its adjacent carbon atoms forms a benzene, naphthalene, pyridine, quinoline, pyrimidine, pyridazine, pyrazine, thiophene or pyrrole ring which may bear a substituent R<SP>1</SP> selected from lower alkyl, amino, bromo, chloro, acetyl, hydroxyl, nitro, Preferably the brightener is present in a concentration of 0À001 to 0À5 g/l. A secondary brightener which is a thio-substituted 6-membered heterocyclic ring compound containing 1 to 3 nitrogen atoms as the hetero-atoms, each nitrogen atom forming a part of a separate azomethine residue (i.e. no two nitrogen atoms are adjacent) and the carbon atom of at least one azomethine group being substituted by a thiol, mercaptide or C 1 to C 3 alkyl thiol group, may be included in the bath, preferably in a concentration of 0À001 to 0À05 g/l. Typically the bath contains 45 to 120 g/l copper cyanide and plating is effected at 140 to 180‹ F. with a current density of 5 to 100 amps/ sq. ft. Agitation may be effected and continuous, interrupted, or periodic reverse current may be used.
