Abstract

1,192,036. Electro-depositing nickel. M & T CHEMICALS Inc. Oct. 17, 1967 [Oct.18, 1966], No.47180/67. Heading C7B. Bright nickel is electro-deposited, e.g. on to a base of Cu, Fe Zn or alloy thereof (including steel), preferably bearing a Cu or semi-bright Ni plate, from an aqueous Ni electro-plating bath containing as primary brighteners (a) 0À002-0À5g/l or a water-soluble acetylenic compound and (b) 0À002-0À1 g/l of a N-propargyl or N-dihalopropenyl pyridinium or quinolinium compound having as cation:- pyridine or (iso) quinoline nucleus, a is 0-5, A is -CX=CHX (X being halogen) or -C # CH, and R* is selected from alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, halogen, alkoxy, carboxyl, carbalkoxy, acetyl, benzyl, sulpho, carboxamido and cyano. Many examples are specified. The preferred acetylenic compound (a) is 2-butyne -1, 4-diol; 1, 4-di-(#-hydroxyethoxy) -2-butyne; 1-#-hydroxyethoxy) -2 butyne -4-ol; or 1, 4-diacetoxy -2-butyne. The anion of the compound (b) is preferably a halide e.g. Cl, Br or I, but may be acetate, sulphate, metho-or etho-sulphate, citrate, chloroacetate or perchlorate. The bath may also include 1-75 g/l of a secondary brightener, such as saccharin, sodium benzene monosulphonate, and 2-30 g/l of an auxiliary secondary brightener such as unsaturated hydrocarbon sulphonates. Watts-type or high chloride baths containing NiSo 4 , NiCl 2 and H 3 BO 3 , or sulphamate-type baths (containing Ni sulphamate instead of NiSO 4 ) and having a pH 3À5-5 may be used with agitation. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 1,046,525, 1,096,711, 1,097,723 and 1,138,262.
