Abstract

733,252. Electroplating with nickel-cobalt alloys. NATIONAL CASH REGISTER CO. March 18, 1953 [April 22, 1952], No. 7501/53. Drawings to Specification. Class 41. In a process for electroplating a base metal with a nickel-cobalt composition, between 1 and 3 grams of toluene sulphonamide per litre of electrolyte and between 5 and 45 grams of boric acid per litre of electrolyte, are added to an aqueous electrolyte comprising a solution of nickel and cobalt salts. An anode of nickelcobalt alloy may be used and the electrolyte may comprise cobalt and nickel chlorides. Alternating current may be used in which the average current density provided by the plating phase is less than ten times and more than one times that provided by the deplating phase. The base metal may be phosphorbronze tape and may be plated by passage through a bath in a continuous run. The contacts to the tape may be cooled by being submerged in the bath, but protected from being plated by a cell having entrant and exit slots through which the tape passes; the cell may be made of a plastic resinous material such as methyl methaerylate. If the contacts are not submerged they may be cooled by having electrolyte flowed over them. Either ortho toluene sulphonamide or para toluene sulphonamide, or a mixture of both, may be used. A wetting agent may.be included, such as sodium lauryl sulphate.
