Abstract

1,244,913. Bearings. LEYLAND GAS TURBINES Ltd. 31 Dec., 1969 [14 Jan., 1969], No.2106/69. Heading F2A. A bearing assembly comprises a bearing 10 and a shaft 1 having a portion 2 of reduced diameter and having a frusto-conical shoulder 4. A sleeve 8 is mounted with a clearance 3 around the portion 2, a frusto-conical face 9 of the sleeve 8 engaging the shoulder 4 and another frustoconical face 9 of the sleeve engaging a frustoconical surface 5 of a removable collar 6. The latter is retained by means of a circlip 7 which is located in an annular recess in the portion 2. The bearing 10 and the sleeve 8 are made of a material having the same coefficient of expansion, the latter being different from that of the shaft. The angle # of inclination of the frustoconical faces 9 of the sleeve 8 with respect to the longitudinal axis of the shaft has a tangent equal to the ratio of the mean radius R of the sleeve 8 to half the mean axial length L of the sleeve. The bearing 10 and the sleeve 8 may be made of ceramic material such as silicon nitride. The collar 6 and the circlip 7 may be replaced by a member which is screwably attached to the end face of the portion 2 and has a head with a frusto-conical face thereon.
