Abstract

1,244,317. Coiling slivers. JAMES MACKIE & SONS Ltd. 17 March, 1969 [27 March, 1968], No. 14796/68. Heading D1F. In apparatus for severing a length of sliver 25 extending between a doffed full can 4A and an empty replacement can commencing to receive sliver from a rotary coiler head, Fig. 1 (not shown), the sliver is clamped at two points between pivoted arms 22 (swung, by the action of a pneumatic cylinder 27, from the the slowed position shown in full line) and slots 20 penetrated thereby, and is then severed by the leaning action of one or the other of pneumatically and synchronously operated hinged blades 35 swung downwardly through a slot 21. The breastplate 15 confines the mass of coiled sliver in a can and the slots 20 and 21 therein are so spaced that the distance between clamping points is greater than the anticipated maximum fibre length and the severing blades act comparatively close to one slot 20 thereby minimising loss of fibres from the sliver.
