Abstract

[Also in Division A4] An umbrella lock comprises a pair of jaws 2, 4 between which the umbrella is retained by a locked door 12 hinged at 14. The space 6 between the jaws is sufficient to accommodate the umbrella above the region of greatest folded bulk so that it may not be drawn through. The door 12 constitutes the body of a lock co-operating with striking plate 16 on jaw 4 engaged by bolts 22, 24 biased into engagement by springs 25. A flat key is inserted into slot 28 behind plate 62 to withdraw the bolts by pressure at cam surface 42 on projecting pins 36, Fig. 5. (see Fig. 2, not shown). The bolt 24 is self-latching into a slot in the striking plate 16 by virtue of chamferred leading edge 38. When the bolts are released by the key, the door springs open because of spring bias 44. When the bolt is free of the striking plate the pin 36 of bolt 22 lodges in slot 48 in the key, thus preventing its removal until the door is pressed back into the closed position. The plate 16 may have several notches for various degrees of closure. (For Figures see next page)
