Abstract

1,243,587. I.C. engine induction passages. SULZER BROS. Ltd. Oct.20, 1969 [Oct. 30, 1968], No. 51296/69. Heading F1B. An inlet valve arrangement of an I.C. engine, particularly of the fuel-ignition type, has a flat restrictor 8, Fig.1, extending partly across the inlet passage 2 approximately perpendicular to the valve axis 10 to provide an inlet opening which is offset from the axis 10 to thereby produce a swirl in the cylinder charge. The opening is partly bounded by a sharp-cornered edge of the restrictor. The edge may be part-circular and have a radius greater than that of the inlet passage, Fig.2 (not shown). Alternatively, the opening may be circular, Fig. 3 (not shown), and have a diameter smaller than that of the bore of valve seat 4. The centre of the opening may be located on the circumference of a circle which is centred on the cylinder axis and which intersects the axis 10, or located on a tangent to that circle. The restrictor may be formed integrally with valve seat 4 as shown, or separately therefrom and be clamped between the valve seat and the cylinder head.
