Abstract

1,242,504. Cartridges which are entirely expelled from guns; firearm barrels. REMING- TON ARMS CO. Inc. 5 Nov., 1969, No. 54341/69. Headings F3A and F3C. A cartridge comprises a deformable plastics casing 1 divided by a transverse wall 4 into a front chamber containing a projectile 8 and a rear chamber containing a propellant 12, at least a part 14 of which is of solid unitary construction and closes off the rear chamber, a primar 10 being secured in the solid part 14, and, together with the propellant, being entirely made of consumable material, so that, upon firing, the propellant and primer are substantially entirely consumed, whereupon the plastics case 1 is deformed and forced out of a gun barrel 17 behind the projectile thus resulting in the entire cartridge being expelled from the gun. A recess or opening 5 in the transverse wall facilitates deformation. Paper foil covers the primer 10 and a plastics film 11 seals the end of the cartridge. The casing 1 is made of polyethylene or a polycarbonate resin, and at least a portion of the case is biaxially orientated. An extraction rim or detent (not shown) in the casing 1 enables unfired cartridges to be extracted from the gun.
