Abstract
1430058 Cartridges HECKLER & KOCH GmbH 11 June 1970 [13 June 1969] 28428/70 Heading F3A Small arms ammunition comprises a cartridge case and a bullet mounted at the front end of the case, the bullet being of smaller calibre than the case and the case housing a propellant charge in such manner that, when fired, bullet and case are propelled together. In one embodiment, as shown in Fig. 1, a cartridge comprises a main body 1, forming a cartridge case, and consisting of two sections 2, 3 of different diameters. The front section 2 having the smaller diameter, forms a forwardly open sleeve into which is fitted a bullet 4 while the rear section 2 forms a sleeve open to the rear, which is filled with powder 5 and closed by a base 6 provided with a percussion cap 7 from which a bore 8 leads to the powder 5. The base 6 has a projecting rim 9 for engagement by an ejector. The main body 1 may be made of a synthetic resin and the base 6 of metal or a hard plastics material. The base 6 is pressed or glued into the rear end of the section 3. On firing the joint tears and the main body 1 and the bullet 4 move along the barrel of the weapon whilst the base 6 rests against the breech of the weapon. The bullet 4 disengages itself from the main body 1 and travels alone towards the target. The rear section 3 decreases in thickness towards the base 6, and can be pressed tightly against the wall of the barrel by the powder gases. Since the main body 1, not the bullet 4, contacts the rifling of the barrel, the bullet 4 may be made of hard metal, particularly uranium (of low U-235 content) which has a high specific weight and is readily available from atomic waste.
