Abstract

1,269,088. Expellable cartridge; small arms. REMINGTON ARMS CO. Inc. 26 Aug., 1969 [27 Aug., 1968], No. 42542/69. Headings F3A and F3C. Expellable shotshell cartridge is adapted to be expelled from the barrel 30 of a gun having inwardly projecting means such as cutters or lands 78 against which the cartridge impacts upon firing so that at least a portion of the cartridge is ruptured to allow the shot to separate. The cartridge comprises a body 10 of thermoplastic material having a sealing partition or end wall 18 which closes a rear chamber 28 housing a propellent charge with primer 34. The shot is enclosed in a chamber on the other side of the partition or end wall 18. The body 10 further comprises a shoulder 40 which serves to locate and support the cartridge in the gun before firing but allows the release of the cartridge on firing. Body 10 is preferably of polyethylene. Other suitable plastics are HBS, terpolymer of acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene, or flexible vinyls, polyamides, cellulosics, or polycarbonates. In the embodiment shown, the body 10 has an integral skirt 12 which retains an openable cup 44 containing the shot. This skirt is ruptured longitudinally by the cutters 78. The propellent may be solid and retained by adhesive, or a loose granular propellent (56), Fig. 3 (not shown), may be retained by a moulded powder disc (54) to which the primer is secured. The cup 44 may be secured by a sprung-in retaining bead (62 or 62a) at the front or rear, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown). In another embodiment the shoulder 40 is replaced by an integral sealing ring (180), Fig. 6 (not shown), intermediate the ends and clamped between the barrel and gun bolt (174). This sealing ring shears off and is left behind on firing. The partition 18 may be formed as a cushioning member with cavities, Fig. 7 (not shown). In a modification the shot is retained by an integrally formed extension of the body 10, Figs. 8 (not shown). The extension forms an openable enclosure with walls slotted at (490a, 490b) to leave hinge points (492). This is kept closed by a separate sleeve (494). In further embodiments, Figs. 10-12 (not shown), the shot chamber is closed by a frangible cup-shaped member (598) which breaks up on impact with a shoulder in the bore. This member may be of polystyrene, rigid vinyl, polyamide, cellulosic, acrylic, chlorinated polyether, phenoxy, polysulphone, or thermosetting plastic, e.g. phenolic, melamine, urea, alkyd, or allylic.
