Abstract

1,241,686. Modifying steel surfaces. KAWASAKI STEEL CORP. Oct.18, 1968 [Oct. 18, 1967], No. 49472/68. Heading C7U. Ferrous sheet is treated with an aqueous solution containing by weight: - 100 parts chromic acid 16-20 parts calcium 8-20 parts polyhydric alcohol and baked at e.g. 200-500‹C. to improve its punchability, corrosion resistance, heat resistance and weldability. The calcium may be provided by calcium bichromate, CaO, Ca(OH) 2 , CaCrO 4 or Ca CO 3 and the polyhydric alcohol may be ethylene glycol, glycerine, sucrose or grape sugar. A non ionic surface active or melting agent such as a polyexyethylene alkyl ether in an amount of 0À002-0À5% may also be present. The coating thickness is 0À5-2À5 microns. The treatment is particularly effective for electrical steel sheet containing less than 4% Si.
