Abstract

1,241,488. Two-part couplings. AMP Inc. 31 Oct., 1969 [22 Nov., 1968], No. 53371/69. Heading H2E. A telephone jack has normally closed pairs of contacts 27 mounted in compartments of an elongated insulating housing 1 for mounting on a panel and having a cover plate 4 containing rows of holes 6, 8, 10. Each contact 27 has a locating tongue 32 above a terminal post 28 to which a wire may be wrapped or clipped, and is so shaped that each opposed pair may be engaged by an insulatirg member 62 of a test plug 52 to break the contact which is normally made at an area 40. Connections to a test circuit are made by four conducting tabs 56 of the plug 52 which are engaged between a portion 50 of a corresponding contact 27 and a side wall 17 of the housing 1. The plug 52 carries two insulating members 62 joined by an offset rib (64, Figs. 8, 9, not shown) which locates in a corresponding slot (12, Fig. 1, not shown) between a pair of holes 8 to polarize the plug and housing. A subscriber may be isolated by inserting a simple insulating plug through a hole 8, and a call may be listened in to by a plug unit having the members 62 omitted.
