Abstract
1,241,473. Fluid shock-absorbers. C. U. PEDDINGHAUS. 18 Sept., 1968 [27 Sept., 1967], No. 44243/68. Heading F2S. In a shock-absorber in which a valved piston 3 works in a liquid-filled cylinder 1, the bottom end of the cylinder is closed and the top end communicates via a duet 7 with a reservoir 9. The only flow paths to and from the lowermost cylinder chamber are via the piston valves (not shown) and the duct 7 connects the top of the cylinder with the bottom of the reservoir. At its top end, the duct is unobstructed, but it may have a constriction 10 at its bottom end. The reservoir is constituted by a tube surrounding the cylinder, pressurized gas being trapped in the space above the liquid surface 8. This arrangement is stated to minimize turbulence and foaming of the liquid. In Fig. 2 (not shown), the piston-rod 4 is at the bottom end of the shock-absorber, the construction being otherwise identical to that of Fig. 1.
