Abstract

1,241,199. Aluminizing metal articles; Alloy steel. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. Oct. 20, 1969 [Nov. 13, 1968], No. 53814/68. Headings C7A and C7F. Articles of e.g. steel, stainless steel or cobalt or nickel based alloys are alluminized in a pack comprising 30 to 60% by weight powdered aluminium, 30 to 60% calcined alumina, and a source of chloride ions which may be either or both part of the gaseous atmosphere in which the reaction takes place or a solid constituent of the pack, e.g. HCl gas or the chlorides of Zn, Al, Sn, Ag, Cd or K. The total weight of Al and alumina comprises 80 to 99% by weight of the mixture. The mixture may also contain aluminium fluoride. The process takes place at 480 to 550‹C. for at least six hours. A stainless steel may consist of (% by weight) C 0À08 to 0À20, Si 0À10 to 0À80, Mn 0À20 to 1À25, P 0À03 (max), S 0À25 (max), Cr 10 to 13, Ni 1À5 (max), Mo 0À3 to 0À95, Nb 0À1 to 0À7, V 0À1 to 1À0, balance iron.
