A precision balance of the constant load type comprises a beam 10 pivoting about a knife edge 11 supported by a bearing surface 12, the beam 10 carrying a counterweight 23 on one short arm and a load pan 17, transparent scale 22, and damping piston 19 on the other longer arm. The load pan is preferably suspended at the centre of the beam.
