Abstract

1,240,888. Photographic dye diffusion transfer material. EASTMAN KODAK CO. Oct. 25, 1968 [Oct.30, 1967], No. 50831/68. Heading G2C. A photographic dye diffusion transfer material comprises a support and a light-sensitive silver halide emulsion layer and in the emulsion layer or in a layer contiguous thereto a salt of the formula I: - or of the formula II:- wherein each R is H, an alkyl radical, or an aryl radical and X<SP>-</SP> is an anion which has little or no deleterious action on the photographic material being processed. Examples include 5, 8-dihydroxy- 4a-azoniaanthracene bromide and 5, 6-dihydroxy- 4a-azoniaanthracene bromide. The material may comprise an integral dye diffusion transfer receiving layer next to the support, which material may have a stripping layer above and next to the receiving layer. The material may contain an overcoat layer lying over the silver halide emulsion layer and which contains a colourless, water-insoluble hydroquinone derivative as an auxiliary silver halide developing agent. A light brown positive image may be obtained by exposing the dye-developer material containing a salt of formula I or II to a light image, causing an alkaline liquid which is free of sulphite ions and which causes said salt to develop the latent image to permeate the layers of the material and allowing the residual salt to diffuse in register to a receiving layer therefor. A blue negative image may be obtained by exposing to a light image a dye diffusion transfer material containing a compound of the formula I, causing an alkaline liquid containing sulphite ions and which causes said salt of the formula I to develop the latent image to permeate the layers of the material and allowing development products of said salt of the formula I to diffuse in register to a receiving layer therefor. A brown positive image may be obtained by exposing to a light image a dye diffusion transfer material containing a dye-developer of the formula II, causing an alkeline liquid which contains sulphite ions and which causes said salt of the formula II to develop the latent image to permeate the layers of the material and allowing the residual salt to diffuse in register to a receiving layer therefor. The preferred alkaline liquid is an aqueous solution comprising dissolved sodium metaborate which may be added as the octahydrate. The alkaline liquid may also contain ascorbic acid as an auxiliary silver halide developing agent.
