Abstract
1,240,829. Chlorination of phenols. RECKITT & COLMAN PRODUCTS Ltd. 4 Oct., 1968 [4 Oct., 1967; 20 May, 1968], Nos. 45305/67 and 23942/68. Heading C2C. A process for the chlorination of phenols comprises contacting one or more phenols with cupric chloride in an aqueous medium and effecting at least a substantial proportion of the chlorination reaction in the presence of hydrochloric acid in excess of that produced during the course of the reaction, at a reaction temperature in the range 75-150‹ C. and recovering the chlorinated phenol so formed. In an embodiment in which an oxygen-containing gas is passed into an aqueous medium comprising the phenol, cupric chloride and hydrochloric acid, the cupric chloride may be present in only catalytic amount 10À1 to 1À0 mole per mole of phenol. Alkali metal chlorides and the chlorides and oxychlorides of vanadium and chromium may also be present in the reaction mixture. The process is suitable for the chlorination of phenol, o- and m-cresol, m-xylenol, o- and pchlorophenol, o- and p-phenylphenol, thymol and resorcinol; in each case the p-chloro isomer forms the major portion of the reaction product.
