1,222,768. Preparation of symmetrical diaryl disulphides. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 2 Dec., 1969 [24 Dec., 1968], No. 58697/69. Heading C2C. The invention relates to a process for the preparation of symmetrical diaryl disulphides wherein an aryl sulphinic acid is reduced in an aqueous acidic medium with sulphur dioxide or sulphur dioxide-donor at a temperature of from 0‹ to 200‹ C. preferably from 20‹ to 130‹ C. The process may be carried out in the presence of hydriodic acid or a substance that forms hydriodic acid under reaction conditions as a catalyst. The aryl sulphinic acid may be obtained in situ by reduction of an aryl sulphonic acid chloride. The process may be carried out in a a sealed system and at an elevated pressure of from 0 to 10 atmosphere gauge. Examples show the preparation of diphenyl disulphide, 2,2<SP>1</SP>,5,5<SP>1</SP> - tetrachloro-, 4,4<SP>1</SP> - dichloro-, 4,4<SP>1</SP>- dimethyl-, 3,3<SP>1</SP>-dinitro-, and 4,4<SP>1</SP>-diamino diphenyl disulphides, and dinaphthyl 2,2<SP>1</SP>-disulphide.
