Abstract

Prepn. of alkali metal dithionites from formic acid or an alkali metal formate or both, SO2 and a basic alkali metal cpd., takes place in soln. or in suspension in 2-methoxyethanol forming the anhydrous dithionite. A S cpd. forming SO2 in the reaction media may also be used. Pref. the SO2 is dissolved in 2-methoxyethanol opt. with water, partic. at 20-35%. The SO2 soln. is introduced simultaneously with a soln. or suspension of basic alkali in water, methoxyethanol or both, into a similar suspension of formate or formic acid, or the formate or formic acid may be added with the basic alkali stream into the methoxyethanol. The reaction takes place at 60-90 degrees C pref. 70-85 degrees C. The alkali formate is pref. in a 20-40% excess over SO2 and the reaction is pref. carried out in an inert atmos. Previous process using lower alcohols has required a pressure reaction; the above gives as good a result using atmospheric pressure.
