1480228 Disulphurizing Claus off-gases SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 6 Aug 1974 [8 Aug 1973 34569/74 Heading C1A [Also in Division G3] In a process for treating the off-gases from a Claus process to remove SO 2 and other sulphur compounds by mixing them with reducing gases containing H 2 and/or CO, passing them at a temperature of 175‹ C. over a sulphided Group VIa/Group VIII metal catalyst (Mendeleev table) supported on an inorganic oxide carrier, cooling the resulting gases, at least partially by direct cooling with an aqueous liquid, to a temperature below the dew point of water and subsequently converting the resulting H 2 S to elemental sulphur; the supply of reducing gases containing H 2 and/or CO required to reduce the sulphur dioxide is controlled by (1) either (a) measuring the H 2 present before or after the direct cooling or (b) the amount of elemental sulphur in the cooling liquid after direct cooling, (2) generating a signal proportional to the H 2 or sulphur measured and (3) using the signal resulting from this measurement to adjust the supply of reducing gases. The hydrogen sulphide present in the treated gases is converted into sulphur by passing the cooled gases through a liquid and regenerable absorbent, regenerating the H 2 S- enriched absorbent and supplying the H 2 S- rich mixture liberated in the regeneration to a Claus plant.
