Abstract

1404581 Purifying crude gas SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 30 Aug 1972 [1 Sept 1971] 40793/71 Heading C5E A crude gas generated by partial combustion of a carbonaceous fuel comprising H 2 and CO and containing soot, H 2 S and COS as impurities is purified by (a) washing the crude gas with water and/or steam to saturate the gas and cooling the gas whereby soot to a large extent is removed as an aqueous soot suspension, (b) passing the cooled gas in the absence of liquid water through one or more elongated open gas channels, having a common inlet and a common outlet, a catalyst for the conversion of COS being provided on, in, or behind the walls of the channel(s) and being freely accessible to the gas passing through the channel(s) and (c) subsequently treating the gas with a sorbent to remove H 2 S. The gas channels may be formed in a block of inert material and catalyst or the channels may have at least one gas permeable wall, e.g. gauze common with an adjacent catalyst chamber. The catalyst may comprise alumina, bauxite, activated clay, aluminium phosphate, thoria or MgCl 2 and optionally contains a metal, oxide or sulphide of a Group VI or Group VIII.
