Abstract
1304658 Production of pyrocatechol and alkyl pyrocatechols UNION RHEINISCHE BRAUNKOHLEN KRAFTSTOFF AG 23 June 1971 [26 June 1970 6 Aug 1970] 29409/71 Heading C2C Pyrocatechol and alkyl pyrocatechol are prepared by chlorinating a sodium phenolate solution having a molar ratio of phenolic compounds to sodium hydroxide of from 1 : 1 to 1 : 2, with sodium hypochlorite at a temperature of from 5 to 60‹ C., hydrolysing the chlorophenols obtained without isolating them from the chlorination mixture by heating the chlorination mixture at a temperature of from 160‹ to 250‹ C., in the presence of from 0À05 to 0À3 g/litre of copper or a corresponding amount of a copper salt as catalyst, acidifying the hydrolysis mixture with sulphuric or hydrochloric acid, extracting the phenolic compounds obtained from the acidified mixture with an organic extractant and recovering pyrocatechol or alkyl pyrocatechol by distillation.
