Abstract
1,157,540. Chlorinated phenols. KONINKLIJKE NEDERLANDSCHE ZOUTINDUSTRIE N.V. 17 April, 1967 [12 May, 19661, No. 17544/67. Heading C2C. Pentachlorophenol and lower chlorinated phenols are prepared by treating phenol or a lower chlorinated phenol with hydrochloric acid and/or chlorine and an oxygen-containing gas at a temperature between 100‹ C. and 350‹ C. in the presence of an oxychlorination catalyst. The reaction is preferably carried out by contacting a mixture of hydrochloric acid and an oxygen-containing gas with the phenol in the form of a vapour and passing the mixture over the catalyst, which may be in the form of a fluid or fixed bed. Intermediates, e.g. 2,4,6- trichlorophenol, may be prepared in good yields by adjusting the reaction conditions.
