Abstract

[Also in Division B3] A press frame comprises a plurality of platelike sub-frames 3 arranged in parallel relationship and each defining a frame opening, and two platens 1, 2 extending through the openings in facing spaced parallel relationship. The moving parts of the press are guided by slide surfaces 7 welded to side members 6 of the subframes. The inner edges of the side members 6 are rebated as at 11, 12, 13 and 16 whereby the tendencies of the frame to bend can be made to counteract one another thereby ensuring that the surfaces 7 remain truly parallel. The end portions of the surfaces 7 can be reduced in thickness (Fig. 3, not shown) or width (Fig. 4, not shown) or both. Alternatively or additionally, slots (17) can be machined in the surfaces 7 (Fig. 4). An intensifier cylinder 18 (Fig. 5) may be secured to the platen 1 by short bolts 23 or a shaped portion 24 engaged by a disc 20, or by a clamping ring 24b. Instead of securing the sub-frames 3 directly to the platens 1 each sub-frame may be fillet welded to a plate (25) or butt-welded to a T-section element (27), Fig. 6 (not shown). The plates (25) and elements (27) are secured by bolts (31) or spigots to a platen member (30).
