In a machine comprising a non-rotory shaft 32 and a rotor 31 having working chambers 37, 38 which periodically communicate with fluid supply and exhaust ports 33a, 33b, 34a, 34b in the shaft, balancing recesses 55a, 55b, 56a, 56b, 65, 75, 66, 76 are provided in the shaft surface, each recess being in communication with its respective port by a duct 47, 48, 57, 58, 67, 68, 77, 78 also formed in the shaft surface. In an alternative machine, Figs.1 and 2 (not shown) two balancing recesses only are provided between the ports on the opposite side of the shaft from the ports with which they communicate. A third embodiment, Fig. 6 (not shown) is described.
