Abstract

1,239,766. Battery charging systems for vehicles. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. 21 Jan., 1969 [29 Jan., 1968], No. 4409/68: Heading H2H. [Also in Division G3] A vehicle battery 11 is charged by a singlephase permanent magnet alternator 12 through a rectifier comprising a pair of diodes and a pair of thyristors. A regulator 16 provides gate current to the thyristors provided that the batteryvoltage is below a predetermined value, and interrupts the rectified output from the alternator for periods which result in stabilized battery voltage. When an ignition switch 13 is closed, capacitor 21 is charged and transistor 19 conducts to ensure that transistor 26 remains off, whereby transistor 29 conducts to illuminate a warning lamp 31. When the alternator is delivering current, it produces substantial ripple voltage across lines 14, 15, to augment the voltage on capacitor 21. The transistor 19 is turned on at the peak of each ripple pulse, and is held off for the rest of the cycle whereby capacitor 24 is charged to enable base current to be supplied to transistor 26. During brief periods of conduction of transistor 19, capacitor 24 discharges to supply base current to the transistor 26. Thus, when there is ripple voltage between lines 14, 15, the transistor 26 conducts and the lamp 31 is off. If the ripple supply is interrupted by the regulator 16, the capacitor 21 discharges to hold the transistor 19 off so that the lamp remains off. If the ripple voltage is absent for a substantial length of time, however, the capacitor 21 discharges completely whereby transistor 19 conducts to illuminate the lamp. When the voltage across lines 14, 15 exceeds a predetermined value, zener diode 33 conducts to turn on the transistor 29 and illuminate the lamp.
