Abstract

1,088,791. Measuring speed electrically. H.W. LAWSON. Oct.22, 1964 [Oct.29, 1963], No. 43067/64. Heading G1N. [Also in Division F1] In a capacitor-discharge ignition system for an I. C. engine (see Division F1) in which a capacitor 26, Fig. 1, is charged by a D.C. -to-D.C. converter 22, 24 to a voltage of 200 to 250 volts and is subsequently discharged through the primary winding 28 of the ignition coil when a silicon controlled rectifier 34 is triggered into conductance by the opening of the contact breaker 42, 48, additional components 36, 38, 40, 68 are provided for measuring the engine speed. When the capacitor 26 is discharged, it over-discharges and becomes charged momentarily to opposite polarity. This switches off the SCR 34, and the capacitor 26 is then re-charged. During the brief time in which the capacitor 26 is charged to opposite polarity, the voltage at the junction between diodes 30, 36 is negative and current flows through the diode 36 to produce a negative voltage pulse across resistor 38. The voltage pulses are integrated by a voltmeter 40 calibrated to read in terms of revolutions per minute.
